Protecting the Mountains from Fire These lookout towers in Lake Arrowhead over the years have become very popular tourist destinations. From these fire towers, visitors can view the surrounding land and on a clear day Catalina Island and the Mojave Desert is visible. The first fire tower constructed, was located on Red Mountain in 1876 and between 1901 and 1903, two more towers were erected. By 1905, there were 81 towers in place, and while still in use, there were over 8,000 fire towers spread throughout the mountains. Early fire towers were similar to crows nests but by 1914 they had become both wooden live in cabs and steel observation towers. During World War II the fire towers were used as an enemy aircraft lookout and were staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Today, volunteers staff the fire towers in Lake Arrowhead. During the fire season, these fire towers are staffed 7 days a week, 8 hours a day and sometimes overnight. The Osborne fire finder, invented in 1920 is still in use in these fire towers today. Volunteers use this device to detect the location of the fire. Visitors to Lake Arrowhead can visit the fire towers and from the tower they can view the surrounding forest and Lake Arrowhead property. Volunteers are also on hand to answer any questions visitors may have.Other popular Arrowhead searches...Lake Arrowhead real estate info Finding a Lake Arrowhead Realtor
