The Story of Blue Jay
The history of Blue Jay in Lake Arrowhead tells us that on their' land, Art and Norma Wixon developed an apple orchard and opened a store and a number of vacation cabins for people visiting Lake Arrowhead. It was from their store that Art and Norma offered supplies to campers and offered accommodation for visitors looking to tour the mountains. In 1934 Stoney DeMent leased the Wixon’s land near Lake Arrowhead and opened what was known as the Blue Jay market named after the colorful birds that live in this area of Lake Arrowhead. The Blue Jay market included a dance floor that was located upstairs and this was later converted into hotel rooms. In 1940 DeMent built a much larger grocery store across the street and the old store which was vacated has now become Pat’s General Store. As Blue Jay grew it began to serve both vacationers and residents looking to purchase property in Lake Arrowhead and escape from city living. Today Blue Jay is known for fine shops, restaurants and recreational facilities and the Blue Jay Festival. Blue Jay is now considered the gateway to Lake Arrowhead and is located near the west shore of the beautiful mountain lake that has made Lake Arrowhead famous.
